They say home is where the heart is, but it’s also a place where you spend a lot, if not most, of your time. And, when it comes to keeping your home clean, there are some things that should be cleaned more regularly than just once a year during a Spring clean. Home cleaning isn’t just about getting rid of dust and grime – it’s about ensuring you maintain good health while at home. It’s that build-up of mold and dust mites that can lead to everything from asthmatic reactions, to allergies.
Haven’t given your home a good deep clean in a while? Don’t worry! We are going to tell you exactly what you should be cleaning, and how often. The good news is a deep clean can be carried out regularly throughout the year. You don’t have to wait for Spring to do a full deep clean.
You want to be washing your bed sheets weekly. Humans can shed up to 2 million skin cells while we sleep, and you don’t want to be sleeping in that! Also, don’t pack your washing machine too tightly when washing sheets. They need space to be properly cleaned.
Pillows and Doonas
Wash your doona and pillows up to 4 times a year to get rid of the build-up of skin cells, moisture and dust mite excrement. A good way to remember is by washing your doona and pillows at the start of each season. Foam pillows can’t be washed in your machine, but you can clean them using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner.
Mattresses should be vacuumed once every 6 months to remove dust. While you are doing this, flip or rotate your mattress up to 4 times a year to help it keep its shape and structural integrity.
You should be washing your towels after every third or fourth use. Make sure they are aired properly to prevent mildew and musty odours.
You probably don’t think you need to clean your dishwasher, but you really do. Clean your dishwasher once a month to prevent a build-up of germs and to keep it running at peak efficiency. Place a cup of distilled white vinegar right side up on the top rack of your dishwasher (while empty) and run the machine on its hottest setting.
Clean your oven twice a year – just make sure you put a lot of elbow grease into it!
Remove and actually soak the shower head once a year. This will remove any build-up, which can help increase your water pressure. If you don’t want to – or can’t – just tie a bag full of vinegar around your shower head and let it soak overnight.
Always clean your toilet regularly – at least once a week – but give it an extra deep clean once a month. This is very important during cold and flu season. Always keep the lid closed as this can help prevent the spread of germs.
Vacuum carpets once a fortnight, but to improve the air quality in your home, deep clean carpets with a steamer once a year.
As a general rule, dogs should be washed about once a month. However, frequency will depend on the breed. Dogs with thicker coats may only need to be bathed 3-4 times a year.
