What to do if your Sydney home is flooded.

We have been inundated with calls from Sydney home owners in the last week or so wanting to use Houseproud’s carpet cleaning service after the recent Sydney floods. We hope Sydney has had its share of flooding for a while. However we did think we should put together some practical advice for you in the event of any future flooding
We recommend you take the below steps:
Find and stop the water intrusion source.
Identify the extent of the water damage. We recommend you trace the pathways of the water to find where the damage has spread.
Plan and start the clean up by collecting everything from the floor and moving furniture.
Find a spare room where some of your household items may need to be stored temporarily while the restoration is in progress. It is important that you protect your personal belongings from any water damage
Please do not do any of the below steps:

Do not use your home vacuum cleaner to remove water (you may experience an electrical shock).
Do not leave your books, photo albums, magazines or other coloured items on wet carpets or floors as they could potentially stain your home carpet.
Do not use your TV, or other household appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.
Do not leave wet fabrics like curtains, lounges etc in place; you need to dry them as soon as possible.

Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging from pooled water

We recommend you take the following steps:

Ensure an appropriate, licensed service company has been called to eliminate the water source or make necessary repairs as required.
Turn off circuit breakers supplying electricity to wet areas; unplug and remove any small electrical devices on the wet carpet.
Remove Oriental rugs or other coloured rugs from wet wall-to-wall carpeting.
Remove your valuable paintings and artworks to a safe, dry place.
Place alfoil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.

Hang curtains away from the floor, and pin up furniture skirts to prevent watermarks and dye marks. Organise for your furniture to be moved to a dry area.
Call a professional service that specialises in flood damage.
Houseproud Carpet Cleaning is experienced with flood damaged carpets.
